FibreCurve

A retrofit corner-protection system concept for fibre-to-the-home installations, exploring open curved guides and removable snap covers for existing cable routes.

The exploration

Design intent

FibreCurve explores a family of matte white indoor fittings for South African FTTH installers: external corners, internal room corners, flat wall turns and trunking exits. Each uses an open mounting guide and a releasable cover so an existing cable can be seated without disconnecting, cutting or re-splicing it. Optional open retention inserts explore round and flat cable profiles.

Design priorities

  • Guide the cable through a smooth path with clearance beneath the cover.
  • Provide accessible mounting feet, optional adhesive pads and releasable snaps.
  • Adapt the guide geometry to each route while retaining a consistent appearance.

Further development

Further development would confirm cable and trunking profiles, guide geometry, cover clearance, retention and mounting on representative surfaces. Existing clips may need releasing before the cable is gently seated; the protector cannot correct a tight bend without sufficient slack. Cable routing must follow the supplier’s installation and installed-service bend limits, which may differ. A suitable flame-retardant PC/ABS grade is proposed for indoor rigid parts, with separately moulded optional TPE inserts and purchased mounting accessories. Tooling, draft, ribs, snaps, gates and ejectors require mould-designer review. Prototypes and testing would assess cable attenuation before and after installation, repeated cover release, retention and adhesive performance.
