FibreEntry

A retrofit wall-entry kit concept for fibre-to-the-home installations, exploring how a split outdoor hood, protective sleeve and indoor plate can fit around an existing cable.

The exploration

Design intent

FibreEntry explores a practical finishing system for South African fibre-to-the-home contractors. The selected rounded hood separates into two lateral halves around an installed cable. A cut-to-length split sleeve lines the wall opening, while a two-part circular indoor plate completes the entry on the inside. Replaceable split inserts explore support for round and flat cable profiles without threading a connector through a closed fitting.

Design priorities

  • Fit around an existing cable with serviceable split components.
  • Explore a rain-shedding hood with an open underside and accessible wall fixings.
  • Finish both sides of the wall with a sleeve trimmed and deburred before assembly.

Further development

Further development would verify wall thicknesses, cable profiles, split-joint tolerances, screw access, drainage and installation sequence. UV-stabilised ASA is proposed for the outdoor rigid parts, with separately moulded TPE inserts; the indoor material remains to be selected. Tooling, gates, ejectors, draft and ribbing are preliminary. Cable routing must follow the cable manufacturer’s minimum bend radius. Physical prototypes and testing would establish weathering, water-ingress behaviour, serviceability and production feasibility.
